Save the date: Montgomery Planning to hold 2021 Design Excellence Awards to honor best architecture and urban design this fall

Fifth Design Excellence Awards will be presented on October 21, 2021 at Celebrate Design 2021, co-hosted by the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter

WHEATON, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), announced it will hold the 2021 Design Excellence Awards to honor the county’s best architecture and urban design this fall. The fifth Design Excellence Awards will be presented on October 21, 2021 at Celebrate Design 2021, co-hosted by the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter. The community is invited to attend this regional event, which will also honor recipients of the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter’s Excellence in Design Awards.

Design Excellence Awards, held every two years, recognize exceptional architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism that make a difference in people’s lives and represent Montgomery County’s highest quality of design to the region, state, and nation. The recipient of the 2019 Design Excellence Award was Thomas Phifer + Partners Architects for the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, MD. In addition to the overall award, an independent jury of experts in the design, construction, development, architectural, and planning fields also selected a winner for a special category in multi-family residential development. This award went to The Pearl development in Silver Spring by Design Collective Architects and The Tower Companies in 2019.

The Celebrate Design 2021 event will be held at Montgomery Planning’s downtown Wheaton Headquarters, the first government-owned building in Maryland to receive the LEED Platinum certification for its innovative, environmentally friendly design, on Thursday October 21, 2021. In previous years, this event has brought together urban designers, architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, builders, policymakers, elected officials, design professionals, artists and interested community members from across Montgomery County and the region.

Montgomery Planning will open submissions for 2021 Design Excellence Awards, including an announcement of this year’s special category, this spring. Tickets are expected to go on sale for the October event in September.
