Master Plan of Highways and Transitways scope of work presented to the Montgomery County Planning Board

Plan will update street classifications to incorporate the Complete Streets Design Guide street types.

Wheaton, Md. – The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, presented the scope of work for the 2024 update to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways (MPOHT) to the Montgomery County Planning Board at its meeting on September 21, 2023.

The technical update to the plan is needed due to the Montgomery County Council’s approval of two bills in 2022 (Bill 24-22 and 34-22) that revised the street types identified in Chapter 49 of the County Code, also known as the “Road Code,” to conform to the county’s Complete Streets Design Guide.

Planners began work on the update in July 2023 and expect the update to the plan to be completed in November 2024. While this effort is highly technical, the planning team will still seek to engage the public throughout the project. This includes the formation of a Technical Advisory group as well as outreach to residents, municipalities, and community groups.
