The update to the Silver Spring streetscape standards focuses on pedestrian-friendly design for public and private development
SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Board, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), approved the 2019 Silver Spring Streetscape Standards at their meeting on December 5, 2019. The standards are a complete update to the Silver Spring Streetscape Plan Technical Manual, which has been in use since 1992. The goal of the update was to provide guidance for public and private development in the downtown business district of Silver Spring to reflect current practices for street tree plantings, paving, furnishings, lighting and stormwater management. The updated streetscape standards will help create a pedestrian-friendly urban sidewalk experience. This area of Silver Spring is home to a mix of shops, restaurants, offices, housing and community gathering areas.

The project began in fall 2017 when the Montgomery County Planning Department, working with landscape and urban design consultant Rhodeside and Harwell, Inc., surveyed current conditions and established an advisory committee to help guide the document. Through a series of stakeholder meetings, public workshops and an online survey, the final document was produced by Planning Department staff and presented to the Planning Board. With the Planning Board approval, the streetscape standards require property owners to follow the guidelines outlined in the document for the public realm extending from the street curbs to building frontage in downtown Silver Spring.
