SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Board and the Planning Department, both part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, are pleased to announce their May 2018 calendar of events. These events offer opportunities for the Planning Department staff and Planning Board members to discuss projects and policies, and engage the public. Montgomery County Planning Department and Board Events in May 2018
May 3 – The Planning Board will hold its last work session for the Bicycle Master Plan to conduct a final review and approve transmittal of the plan to the County Executive and County Council. The Board will review the zoning text amendment introduced by the County Council in April 2018 for a signature business headquarters and expedited development review. For more details, consult the Planning Board agenda, which will be posted online 10 days before the meeting date.
May 9-11 – The Planning Department and the National Center for Smart Growth are co-sponsoring the Makeover Montgomery 4 conference with sessions devoted to competitive, healthy, inclusive and smart communities. Events will be held in College Park and Silver Spring. Check out the MM4 website for registration and program details.
May 9 – The Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Department auditorium to discuss historic area work permit applications and issues related to historic properties in Montgomery County. Applications are due 21 days before the meeting.
May 10 – The Planning Board will not hold a meeting so its members can attend the Makeover Montgomery 4 conference in Silver Spring. Check out the MM4 website for registration and program details.
May 12 – Enjoy Bike Silver Spring’s Art Ride , co-sponsored by the Planning Department and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Meet at 10 a.m. at Veterans Plaza and bike around Silver Spring at a gentle pace while learning about some of the public art you see every day (and maybe a few pieces that you hadn’t noticed). Bikers of all ages and skill levels are invited to enjoy the group ride, which will be about five miles with many stops. Sign up at waba.org/silverspringrides.
May 17 – The Planning Board will be briefed on the findings and recommendations of a study of housing for older adults in Montgomery County, titled the Housing for Seniors Study. The Board will hold the first work session for the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan and the second work session for the MARC Rail Communities Plan. For more details, consult the Planning Board agenda, which will be posted online 10 days before the meeting date.
May 18 – The Planning Department will participate in Bike to Work Day, sponsored by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Staff will be at the pit stops in Silver Spring, Bethesda, White Flint and Takoma Park to highlight the recommendations in the Planning Board Draft of the Bicycle Master Plan. May 28 – On Memorial Day, join a group bike ride from Silver Spring to downtown Washington, DC where streets near the National Mall will be closed to auto traffic. The trip is part of Bike Silver Spring, co-sponsored by the Planning Department and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. It will start at Veterans Plaza at 10 a.m. and continue to Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park, before heading south toward DC and the Mall (about 12 miles one way). After cruising the car-free streets in downtown DC, riders can ride back the same way they came, take Metrorail or stay in DC for the Memorial Day festivities. Register for the event online.
May 31 – The Planning Board will be briefed on the Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan Annual Monitoring Report and review various development projects. For more details, consult the Planning Board agenda, which will be posted online 10 days before the meeting date.
