Taste of Wheaton festival, social bike rides and community meetings will be held during the month
SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Board and the Planning Department, both part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, are pleased to announce their June 2018 calendar of events. These events offer opportunities for the Planning Department staff and Planning Board members to discuss projects and policies, and engage the public. Montgomery County Planning Department and Board Events in June 2018
June 3 – The Taste of Wheaton festival is a great opportunity to sample a wide variety of foods from local restaurants and enjoy live entertainment. This year’s event will be held on Parking Lot 17 at 2320 Price Avenue (Price Avenue and Fern Street), one block east of the Wheaton Metro Station. The festival is also a chance to learn about some of the proposed upgrades to the area. Planners will be present to discuss the details of the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan, Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan and Bicycle Master Plan. June 4 – A community meeting about the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Planning Department auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring). Planners will discuss various aspects of the sector plan as it is being developed and share a draft of the Concept Framework Plan, which includes suggestions from residents, business owners, land owners and county and state agencies. The Concept Framework Plan defines the basic organization, structure and evolution of the sector plan recommendations, which will be refined throughout the summer. Those planning to attend the meeting are encouraged to RSVP online.
June 7 – The Planning Board will hold the second work session for the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan and review the Urban Parks and Open Spaces Design Guidelines. Consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted online 10 days before the meeting date.
June 9 – The Planning Department and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association are co-sponsoring the Sweet Ride through downtown Silver Spring and Takoma Park as part of the Bike Silver Spring events. Meet the group at Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring at 10 a.m. for the casual bike ride with stops at several local eateries and shops for delicious sweet treats. The ride is part of the Planning Department’s Silver Spring Placemaking Initiative.
June 11 – The Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills React Map will be launched so residents and business owners can send their comments about community concerns via smart phones to the Planning Department. This outreach tool will provide feedback about issues related to the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan and help planners respond to specific issues in their planning recommendations. June 14 –The Planning Board will be briefed about the Colocation of Public Facilities Study and the annual school test results that determine whether any schools or cluster service areas should be subject to moratorium. June 21 – The Planning Board will hold a work session for the MARC Rail Communities Sector Plan and discuss various regulatory cases and proposed water and sewer service map amendments. Consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted online 10 days before the meeting date.
June 23 – Join the Bike Safari to the National Zoo from Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring, starting at 10 a.m. Cycle about 7.5 miles through Rock Creek Park and then enjoy a couple hours at the zoo. You’ll have the option to bike back, take Metro or continue your own adventure from the zoo. The ride is part of the Planning Department’s Silver Spring Placemaking Initiative.
June 28 – The Planning Board will hold another work session for the MARC Rail Communities Sector Plan, review amended regulations for forest conservation and discuss various regulatory cases.
