Montgomery County Planners to Present Scope of Work for Chevy Chase Lake Sector Plan

SILVER SPRING – On Thursday, July 1, the Montgomery County Planning Board reviewed a scope of work for the Chevy Chase Lake Sector Plan, which proposes better connections for residents, neighborhood sustainability, and more diversity in housing and public amenities.

In the scope of work, planners describe how they will diversify services and make better connections for residents in cars, on pedals or aboard future light rail trains in Chevy Chase Lake, a community of about 8,200 along Connecticut Avenue between East-West Highway (MD 410) and Jones Bridge Road.

The community, home to a neighborhood-scale shopping center, a public library, an elementary school, numerous civic organizations and the Capital Crescent Trail, is a future stop of the proposed Purple Line. Among other goals, the sector plan will address how to integrate the Purple Line station and associated improvements into the community. Chevy Chase Lake is one of a series of communities along the Metrorail route being reexamined by planners.

In April, more than 100 area residents attended an open house at the Chevy Chase Library to provide planners with their thoughts on local issues. Among the community’s concerns: traffic congestion, need for pedestrian improvements, lack of public spaces, limited housing choices, and limited retail and commercial services.

In the scope of work, planners addressed those concerns with broad recommendations about the Purple Line and other transportation improvements, neighborhood sustainability and quality of place, and preserving the existing character of the community. Once the Planning Board approves the scope of work, planners will hold community meetings and further analyze the area throughout the summer and fall.

Planners develop master and sector plans to create a framework for each community designed to last 15 to 20 years. Those visions help planners and policy-makers – such as the Planning Board and County Council – develop land use strategies and decide on proposed development.
