Montgomery County Planners to Host Community Forum on Wheaton Sector Plan

SILVER SPRING, MD – Planners preparing a new vision for the future of Wheaton will present their recommendations and ideas to the community on Wednesday, May 19.

Residents, property owners, developers and anyone interested in downtown Wheaton should attend the forum, which will preview recommendations for the proposed Wheaton Sector Plan before planners present to the Planning Board later this spring.

The proposed Sector Plan will encourage reinvestment, good design, efficient transportation, better pedestrian links, inviting public spaces, environmental sustainability and more. Planners view the forum as one way to learn from Wheaton residents, workers, and business owners about what they think the Wheaton of the future should be like. While the presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m., doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for visitors to preview displays and other visual depictions of the plan.

The Planning Department last examined Wheaton’s Sector Plan 19 years ago. Master and sector plans look ahead 15 to 20 years to create a long-range planning framework for each community.

After the May 19 forum, the planners will finalize their draft of the plan and present to the Planning Board in June. The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the plan later this summer. After a detailed review of the draft during a series of worksessions, the Planning Board will send its draft to the County Council for final review and approval.
