Judges Pick Kensington Photo Contest Finalists; Winners to be Announced December 13

SILVER SPRING – Judges evaluating photos submitted in the 2009 Day in the Life of Kensington photo contest have chosen 12 finalists whose images depict the historic, close-knit community. Kensington Mayor Peter Fosselman will announce the top winners at the town’s December 13 tree-lighting ceremony.

The photo contest, launched last summer, dovetailed with the draft Kensington Sector Plan, a vision for the community developed by the county Planning Board. The contest drew about 70 submissions. All photos were taken within the Town of Kensington and environs by residents.

The Sector Plan draft, which will be reviewed and eventually approved by the County Council, redefines the Town Center as a mix of businesses and community facilities with pedestrian friendly connections to Kensington’s established neighborhoods. Some contest images were featured in the Planning Board draft of the Sector Plan.

Planners and town officials encouraged residents to submit original, amateur photographs depicting scenes of town life, historic sites, events, neighborhoods and public spaces to demonstrate what they find great about Kensington. The day-in-the-life concept was intended to collect images characteristic of the town, which dates to the mid-1800s.

Contest prizes were donated by area businesses. Judges included a local art teacher, a town resident and three Planning Department staffers.

The tree-lighting and awards ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. December 13 at Town Hall, 3710 Mitchell Street, Kensington.
