The Montgomery County Planning Department has been responsible for street names and address numbers in Montgomery County since the 1950’s. All requests for address verifications, address assignments, address changes, or revisions to address plans, are reviewed by the Information Services Team of the Montgomery County Planning Department for The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC).
Address verification letter
An address verification letter is an official statement from the Montgomery Planning Department that confirms the existence and accuracy of a physical address. The letter validates the address provided by the requester and notes property details in which it is associated with. This letter is mainly used for permitting purposes, utility services, and/or banks to validate an address.
Note: Address verification letters from Montgomery Planning do not confirm a person’s or owner’s residency.
Address assignment letter
Address assignment letter is an official document confirming newly assigned street number and name for a property provided by Montgomery Planning. This letter is used to assign addresses for new developments, new properties, or is used to assign requested changes or revisions to existing addresses if requests falls within the guidelines of the County’s “Addressing and Street Name” Manual. Address assignment letters provides property details in which it is associated with, as well as stating the effective date of the new address.
Following the assignment of addresses, the new address is notified to other Montgomery County government agencies (including Fire and Rescue Services, Police Department, and the Department of Permitting Services), US Postal Services, WSSC, and the State Department of Assessment and Taxation.
Address plan
An address plan is a scaled map showing the layout of streets and parcels for a new development, used to assign and designated street names and address numbers.
