SILVER SPRING, MD – Residents, property owners and business owners in the Takoma-Langley Crossroads area can learn about the planning department’s recommendations for the future of the community at a meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 at Takoma Academy.
The Takoma/Langley Crossroads sector plan looks ahead 20 years and envisions ways to improve quality of life in the community, which sits on the border with Prince George’s County. Among the planners’ main recommendations are strategies to broaden housing opportunities, preserve affordable housing and strengthen economic opportunities for small businesses. The plan also considers ways to better connect people to jobs, community services and public transit – especially with the proposed Purple Line light rail or rapid bus system planned for the area.
A draft of staff’s preliminary recommendations will be considered by the Montgomery County Planning Board later this month. The board will schedule a public hearing on the plan for this summer, then hold work sessions. At the end of that process, the Planning Board will finalize its version of the plan and send it to the County Council for review and eventual approval.
Located in the southeast corner of Montgomery County, Takoma/Langley Crossroads is among the most culturally diverse communities in the region. Partly as a result of a 2007 pedestrian access and mobility study, which identified strategies for pedestrian safety, planners are working to incorporate better, safer access to bus stops and proposed Purple Line stations.
Every area of the county has a master or sector plan. Each plan is intended to look ahead 15 to 20 years. Master and sector plans establish zoning and are used as guides for funding public improvements and for planners reviewing development applications.
