SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, has opened registration for its conference, Makeover Montgomery 4 Competitive, Healthy, Inclusive and Smart Communities, to be held from Wednesday, May 9 through Friday, May 11, 2018 in College Park and Silver Spring, Md.

“The biennial Makeover Montgomery Conference has garnered a reputation as being one of the best planning-related events in the region,” says Planning Director Gwen Wright. “This year’s lineup of presentations and keynote speaker will address the most important challenges and creative solutions confronting our communities and set the stage for a lively conversation about how to plan for the future of Montgomery County.”
Attendees will hear presentations focused on innovative planning and policy tools, and strategies that can help transform our suburbs into exciting, attractive and sustainable communities. Multiple session tracks are offered showcasing presenters from the DC area and across the nation.

Thursday, May 10, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, May 11, 2018, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building (One Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring, MD).

Keynote Speaker Will Address Trends Shaping Communities
The conference will begin with a presentation by technology expert Peter Leyden, who will reveal the societal and economic trends shaping the future of our communities. This keynote address will take place at the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation on May 9 at 7 p.m.
Leyden draws on his unique background as journalist and entrepreneur to weave big ideas together into coherent narratives about the future of business. As founder and CEO of Reinventors, he oversees gatherings of top innovators who work on how to reinvent our world. Previously, as managing editor of Wired magazine, Leyden helped introduce the world to the digital revolution and introduced his own big ideas in the books “What’s Next” and “The Long Boom.”
With an inside line on upcoming trends and how they will impact your organization—including artificial intelligence, blockchain technology and the sharing economy—Leyden provides crucial big-picture perspective on what it takes to thrive in an increasingly complex marketplace.
Conference Sessions Organized Around Four Themes
The conference will continue on Thursday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, May 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building (One Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring, MD). Conference organizers are pleased to present an exciting lineup of regional and national experts to lead discussions on a variety of topics within the following tracks:

These themes address the challenges faced by planners and residents as they grapple with how to adapt to demographic shifts, changing housing preferences and growing infrastructure costs in the suburbs—all while making communities more economically and environmentally sustainable, inclusive, healthy, safe and equitable.
Conference sessions will address a variety of topics, including the impact of gentrification on suburban neighborhoods, the role of public art in placemaking, retail trends, digital tools for civic engagement and the future of driverless cars. This event will showcase ideas and opinions from some of the brightest planning minds in the country.

The Makeover Montgomery 4 conference is being organized through a partnership between the Montgomery County Planning Department and National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education at the University of Maryland. The 2018 event follows similar conferences held in 2011, 2014 and 2016 by the Planning Department and University of Maryland.
