Community Invited to Participate in Montgomery Planning’s “The Takeaway” – A Series of Online Conversations

First online event will focus on the Westbard Sector Plan using Google Hangout tool

Silver Spring, MD – Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is inviting anyone with an interest in the future of Westbard to participate in a series of online conversations regarding the Westbard Sector Plan. The dialogue will start the week of November 10 and continue during the Westbard community workshops being held on November 10, 12, 13 and 14 to encourage public participation in the planning process.

Through the “Google Hangout” platform, planners are providing another alternative for community engagement that can be done from the convenience of a computer or a mobile device.

How it works: To participate in the online video chat, attendees will need a Gmail account and web cam-enabled mobile device or computer. The series can also be followed via an online live stream. Navigate to the Montgomery Planning Department Takeaway Series and join the conversation. Interested stakeholders can also participate via Twitter, Facebook, or our PlanWestbard webpage. After the live event, the Takeaway event can be accessed on www.montgomeryplanning.org/planwestbard .

This online series follows the PlanWestbard Kickoff meeting in September and Scope of Work meeting on October 21. The Takeaway Series will launch with the weeklong Community Charrette starting on November 10.

Themes to be discussed at The Takeaway Series:

-Connectivity
-Parks and Open Space
-Environment
-Land Use, Zoning and Design

“During the outreach process, staff heard that while there was an interest in participating in the Charette in person, it was not always convenient,” said Melissa Williams, Outreach Coordinator. “Now we are excited to offer this new online tool to make it easy for stakeholders to get involved with the process, get connected with staff and stay engaged with the Westbard Sector Plan.”

Westbard Background:
Westbard lies in the southwestern part of Montgomery County, approximately one mile from the DC boundary line. It is less than two miles from the commercial areas of Friendship Heights and Bethesda. The Westbard area is served by two major northwest to southeast highways: River Road and Massachusetts Avenue and is surrounded by well-established single-family neighborhoods. Over a period of years, the residential uses were built around the commercial/industrial areas, which extend along River Road and Westbard Avenue. The popular regional Capital Crescent Trail runs the length of Westbard.
