Planning Department will meet with Maryland Department of Planning to discuss the new state development plan and hold second event of Winter Speaker Series
SILVER SPRING, MD â€“ The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is pleased to announce its January 2018 calendar of events. These events offer opportunities for the Planning Department staff and Planning Board members to discuss projects, policies and engage with the public. January 1-12 – The deadline has been extended for submitting presentation proposals onlineÂ for the conference Makeover Montgomery 4: Healthy, Smart, Inclusive and Competitive Communities, co-sponsored by the Planning Department and the University of Marylandâ€™s National Center for Smart Growth. The conference will be held from May 9 through May 11, 2018 in College Park and Silver Spring, MD to discuss cutting-edge ideas for transforming the suburbs. Presentations should focus on innovative planning and policy tools, and strategies that can help transform our suburbs into exciting, attractive and sustainable communities. January 2 â€“ The Planning Department is accepting applications from county property owners seeking financial benefits for faithfully restoring the exteriors of their historic structures. To be eligible for the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Tax Credit, the property must be listed in the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation. Owners must file an application, including documentation of the repairs that were done, with the historic preservation staff of the Planning Department by April 2, 2018. The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will then evaluate the applications to determine whether the scope of the work meets the eligibility requirements for the program. The work must have been completed no later than December 31, 2017.
January 4 â€“ The Planning Board will not meet in observance of the holiday season.
January 8 â€“ The Planning Department is hosting a public event, A Better Maryland: Community Listening Session Agenda, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Departmentâ€™s headquarters (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). The purpose of the session is to hear from county residents about the strengths, challenges and issues in their communities, so their ideas can be reflected in a new state development plan, called A Better Maryland, that is being created by the Maryland Department of Planning. This state plan will integrate county and local plans to support existing communities and create quality places.
January 11 – Planners will present preliminary recommendations for the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan to the Planning Board. For details, consult the Planning Board agenda, which is posted online 10 days before the session.
January 24 – The public is invited to attend the second session of the Planning Departmentâ€™s annual Winter Speaker Series from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event will focus on the economic future of the suburbs and will include a presentation about county retail trends by Heather Arnold, Director of Research and Analysis for Bethesda-based StreetSense. Arnold will be joined by Peter McLaughlin, Development Director of Rockville-based ProMark Real Estate Services, who will discuss the Octave condominiums in Silver Spring, a 1964 office building transformed by ProMark into residential units, and the challenges of such conversions. The free session will be held in the Departmentâ€™s auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). RSVPs are encouraged.
January 25 â€“A public hearing will be held for the Bicycle Master Plan at the Planning Board meeting. For details about testifying, consult the Planning Board agenda, which is posted online 10 days before the session.
