Montgomery County is attempting to demonstrate that realizing Vision Zero is not just possible in San Francisco and Washington DC, but also in places like Wheaton, Aspen Hill and Germantown.<\/p>\n<p>While many Vision Zero cities benefit from a grid of streets with walkable blocks, low design speeds and a land use context that conveys \u201cslow down\u201d to drivers, the suburbs are typically characterized by longer blocks and auto-oriented land uses that facilitate higher speeds. The Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking to answer this question through the transformation of commercial areas such as White Flint and the integration of Vision Zero in master plans in other communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4844\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Speed-Limit\" width=\"280\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Speed-Limit.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>Whether applied to an urban, suburban or rural area, the Vision Zero policy fundamentals are the same: saving lives means reducing speeds and decreasing the chance for collisions. The redevelopment of White Flint offers an opportunity to repurpose excessively wide roads and travel lanes to provide separate space for sidewalks, bikeways and street trees, as well as create an interconnected network of low speed and low volume residential streets.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/planning\/communities\/east-county\/veirs-mill-corridor-plan\/\">Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan<\/a> for an area stretching from Wheaton to Rockville provides an opportunity to evaluate a heavily traveled corridor, dominated by cars, trucks and buses \u00a0and inadequate infrastructure for walking, bicycling and transit use in the context of Vision Zero. The recently issued <a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Veirs-Mill-Corridor-Master-Plan-Public-Hearing-Draft-WEB-3-16-18.pdf\">Public Hearing Draft of the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan<\/a> recommends short-term Vision Zero strategies to provide continuous walkways and bikeways, improve access to transit and increase connectivity to community facilities and neighborhood uses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4843\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3500\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_3500.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>In the long term, the plan recommends the transformation of Veirs Mill Road from a motor vehicle dominated corridor to a safe, efficient and comfortable complete street that serves all users.
