{"id":2496,"date":"2011-05-17T14:21:25","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T14:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/?p=2496"},"modified":"2018-11-15T15:04:54","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T20:04:54","slug":"bicycle-conference-follow-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/2011\/05\/bicycle-conference-follow-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Bicycle Conference Follow-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">guest post: David Anspacher<\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/montgomerycivic.org\/\">Montgomery County Civic Federation\u2019s<\/a> bicycle conference got representatives from various agencies together, including M-NCPPC, MCDOT, MDOT, MD SHA, and WMATA, to talk about their bicycle planning and implementation activities.<\/p>\n<p>In the late morning, attendees \u00a0began developing an action plan for advancing bicycling in the County. There were lots of good ideas, many dealing with ways to reduce the speed of car traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Francoise Carrier, Chair of the Planning Board, provided concluding remarks. She identified three ways that the Planning Board can work to improve bicycling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>through <strong>master planning<\/strong>, find opportunities to break up large blocks and expand the street grid, creating a network of low volume, low speed roads overlaid with \u00a0bike lanes and off-road paths<\/li>\n<li>through the <strong>zoning code rewrite<\/strong> recommend bicycle parking requirements that vary by land use type and the size of a development, with shower and change facility requirements included<\/li>\n<li><strong>crediting \u00a0developers<\/strong> who agree to locate a bike sharing station on their property and who fund its capital or operating expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good thoughts and energy at the conference should be the basis to improve bicycling in the County.
