The structure is the only single-family dwelling designed by Marcel Breuer in Montgomery County, and is one of four residential buildings he designed in Maryland.\u00a0 The residence was built for Seymour Krieger, a communications lawyer, and his wife Rita.\u00a0 The Krieger family lived here until 1964.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2439\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/35-161-Seymour-Krieger-House-11-20081.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2439\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2439\" title=\"35-161 Seymour Krieger House 11-2008\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/35-161-Seymour-Krieger-House-11-20081.jpg\" alt=\"Marcel Breuer's Krieger House\" width=\"481\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcel Breuer&#39;s Krieger House<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The resource is\u00a0an outstanding example of\u00a0an International Style residence.\u00a0\u00a0Its transparent volumetric form, exposed steel framing, lack of applied ornamentation and balanced asymmetry are hallmarks of the\u00a0style.\u00a0The triangular-shaped corner lot was landscaped by prolific landscape designer Dan Kiley.\u00a0 The project was the first of five collaborations between Breuer and Kiley nationwide, and was one of only two projects these distinguished designers worked together on in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>The Krieger House is designated locally, on\u00a0Montgomery\u00a0County&#8217;s\u00a0Master Plan for Historic Preservation, and is also listed on the National Register of HIstoric Places.<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:0.9em;border-top:1px solid #F0EBE6; color:#796957;margin-top:20px; padding-top:0;\"><em>Montgomery Modern explores mid-century modern buildings and communities that reflect the optimistic spirit of the post-war era in Montgomery County, Maryland. From International Style office towers to Googie style stores and contemporary tract houses, Montgomery Modern celebrates the buildings, technology, and materials of the Atomic Age, from the late 1940s through the 1960s.
