This expenditure is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Embodied_energy\">embodied energy<\/a>\u2014the energy already invested to process materials, transport them, and finally construct a building.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreenestbuilding.org\/#demoEnergy\">Demolition wastes embodied energy<\/a>.\u00a0 When that waste is factored in with the energy needed to transport demolished building materials to a landfill and the energy needed to construct a new building on the site, any net energy savings typically doesn&#8217;t kick in for three or four decades.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2-demolition.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1528\" title=\"2 demolition\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2-demolition-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2-demolition-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2-demolition.jpg 870w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Reusing existing buildings conserves energy and reduces construction and demolition debris in landfills. During <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preservationnation.org\/take-action\/preservation-month\/\">National Preservation Month<\/a>, we are reminded of historic preservation\u2019s role in sustainability.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Brookings Institution predicts that by 2030 we will demolish 82 billion square feet or 1\/3 of the existing commercial space. This is enough construction debris to fill 2,500 football stadiums.<\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preservationnation.org\/issues\/sustainability\/sustainability-numbers.html\">information<\/a> compiled by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preservationnation.org\/issues\/sustainability\/sustainability-numbers.html\">National Trust for Historic Preservation<\/a>, building a new 2,000 square foot house generates 4 pounds of trash per square foot, of which only 20-30% is recycled, and<\/li>\n<li>Construction of a new 50,000 square foot commercial building requires as much energy as it would take to drive a car 20,000 miles per year, <em>for 730 years<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Guest Post by Lisa Mroszczyk<\/p>\n<p>Think of all the energy it has taken over generations to build the County\u2019s existing building stock.
