{"id":1196,"date":"2010-04-16T11:25:01","date_gmt":"2010-04-16T11:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/?p=1196"},"modified":"2026-03-23T12:52:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:52:01","slug":"rethink-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/2010\/04\/rethink-infrastructure\/","title":{"rendered":"Rethink Infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">At the second event of the Rethink speaker\u2019s series, Casey Anderson of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waba.org\/\">WABA<\/a> and Richard Layman of <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanplacesandspaces.blogspot.com\/\">Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space <\/a>talked about making (or trying to make) the suburbs more bike friendly for cyclists, both commuters and recreational riders.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson has interviewed 10,000 federal employees about their attitudes and experiences and found some not surprising stats\u2014potential riders are afraid of car traffic, and some surprising ones\u2014even those who would never consider riding a bike think it\u2019s worthwhile to invest in bike and pedestrian infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson says the take-away for policy-makers and politicians is that this is not flaky, the community will support this investment.<\/p>\n<p>Layman is seeking to make cycling \u201cirresistible,\u201d and emphasized that a bike-friendly cities like Portland or Amsterdam are created by \u201cbreakthrough decisions\u201d and \u201cincremental steps,\u201d and that this can take 40 years.
