{"id":1173,"date":"2010-04-15T14:41:11","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T14:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/?p=1173"},"modified":"2026-04-27T11:14:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T15:14:43","slug":"on-libraries-and-books-%e2%80%a6-and-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/2010\/04\/on-libraries-and-books-%e2%80%a6-and-connections\/","title":{"rendered":"On Libraries and Books \u2026 and Connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">One of the first things I did when I moved recently was to find the local library.\u00a0 When I lived in Rockville, I had gotten used to being able to walk to the <a title=\"Twinbrook Library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountymd.gov\/Library\/branches\/Twinbrook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twinbrook library<\/a> and was hoping that my new place was equally library accessible.\u00a0 It turns out that <a title=\"Long Branch Library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountymd.gov\/Library\/branches\/LongBranch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Long Branch library<\/a> is about 6 blocks away \u2013 across from my two grocery stores, bank, and various other shops and restaurants that I am beginning to explore.\u00a0 If it hadn\u2019t been nearby, I still could have used the <a title=\"Silver Spring Library\" href=\"https:\/\/montgomerycountymd.gov\/library\/branches\/mcgee.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silver Spring library<\/a> near my office, but for weekends \u2013 why take the bus into Silver Spring \u2026 unless I\u2019m going to the gym\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>When I got to the library, I looked over the community board: what events and meetings were happening in the neighborhood?\u00a0 What issues were important to the community?\u00a0 The board reminded me that libraries are a crucial to making connections within communities \u2013 as meeting halls, hang outs, information hubs, and \u2013 of course \u2013 knowledge depositories.<\/p>\n<p>A new library in the District points to how well libraries can foster connections and build social capital in a neighborhood.\u00a0 As reported by <a title=\"WP Benning Library Article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/04\/AR2010040402920.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Kennicott<\/a> in the Washington Post, <a title=\"Benning Library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dclibrary.org\/plan-visit\/benning-dorothy-i-height-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benning Library<\/a> features entrances that open directly on sidewalks &#8212; connecting the facility to pedestrians, especially those using the adjacent shopping center.\u00a0 Inside, books, periodicals, digital media, computer terminals, community space, and meeting rooms ensure that generations and people of diverse backgrounds can use the library as a nucleus for building and enriching their community.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/benning-library-e1271343822762.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1176\" title=\"benning library\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/benning-library-e1271343822762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The Benning Library building is a well-designed, well-integrated piece of contemporary architecture by Davis Brody Bond Aedas.\u00a0 The fact that care was given to the design says something to the people who will use the library \u2013 that they are important and worth investing in.<\/p>\n<p>Happily, similar care and attention to design were given to a newly designed library in Montgomery County: the <a title=\"Olney Library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountymd.gov\/Library\/branches\/Olney.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olney Library<\/a> near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Laytonsville Road.\u00a0 As one of my urban design colleagues says, the redesign provides a soaring new roofline to update the rather tired style of the 80\u2019s era building.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1178\" title=\"olney1\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney11-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney11-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney11.jpg 882w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1179\" title=\"olney2\" src=\"http:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney2-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney2-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/blog-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/olney2.jpg 922w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Both designs make the most of pedestrian links to shopping and residential areas, reinforcing social connections and decreasing environmental impacts. The fact that both designs also emphasize and allow better access to books in print as well as digital information online has further environmental benefits. While every book published may have a lesser impact on natural resources than the <a title=\"NY Times Books versus EReaders\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2010\/04\/04\/opinion\/04opchart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manufacture of every electronic reader<\/a>, a shared book reduces the environmental impact even more \u2026 and sharing knowledge and resources furthers a sense of community.
